Teen taidetta ollakseni ihminen. Juuri taiteen tekemisen välttämättömyys tekee meistä ihmisiä.
Taide on tullut elämääni äitini ja isoäitini myötä. Äitini työskenteli minua odottaessaan kuvaamataidon opettajana. Kun hän kuoli, ymmärsin että uusia maalauksia ei enää tule. Onneksi hänen pehmeät viivansa jäivät elämään luonnoskirjojen sivuilla ja maalauksissa. Äitini on käynyt samaa koulua kuin Tom of Finland. Tunnistan Laaksosen varhaisissa luonnoksissa samaa kuin äitini piirroksissa.
Väreistä olen oppinut leikkiessäni isoäidin kangaspuiden alla. Noudatan värioppeja jopa ruokavaliossani: syön paljon vihreää, usein punaista, välillä keltaista, ja violettia silloin kun haluan stimuloida luovuuttani.
Taide ei ole ikäkysymys
Isoäitini teki parhaimmat taidetekstiilinsä yli 70-vuotiaana. Työskennellessäni mainosalalla päätin että ryhdyn taiteilijaksi 60-vuotiaana. Näin olen myös tehnyt.
Marraskuussa 2023 kuratoin osaksi Turun kaupungin Kulttuurin välitilat -projektia näyttelyn, johon laitoin esille myös omia muste- ja akryylimaalauksiani.
Heinäkuussa 2024 työskentelin AARK Archipelago residenssissä Korppoossa jo keväällä aloittamiani purjehduksiin liittyviä maalauksia. Olen nimennyt ne veneiden mukaan. Kerron maalauksissa purjehdusmatkoihin liittyvistä tunteista kuten ilosta, keveydestä, mustasukkaisuudesta, pelosta ja ahtaudesta. Tyyliltään ne ovat surrealistisia, värikkäitä ja lapsenomaisia.
Syksyllä 2024 aloitin uuden sarjan teemasta ’Olin feministi jo 1800-luvulla’ . Siinä käsittelen nykypäivän polarisaatioita huumorin ja etäännytyksen keinoin. En tee muotokuvia vaan karikatyyrejä, geneerisiä suffragettikuvia, joissa voin vastustaa sotaa ryhtymättä julistajaksi.
Keväällä 2025 olen pitänyt taidenäyttelyn Pikku-Vallilassa Helsingissä. Osa töistä on kesän 2025 näytteillä Pasilan Rauhanasemalla sekä syksyllä Turussa Greve Cafe & Delin seinillä. Haluan pitää näyttelyitä paikoissa, joissa työni synnyttävät uusia merkityksiä. Kahviloissa käy myös paljon ihmisiä, jotka saattavat vierastaa gallerioita ja museoita.
I make art to be human. It is the necessity of making art that makes us to be more human.
Art came into my life from my mother and grandmother. My mother worked as a visual arts teacher while she was expecting me. When she died in 2020, I realized that there would be no more paintings from her. Fortunately, her soft lines live in the pages of her sketchbooks and in paintings too. My mother went to the same school as Tom of Finland. I have recognized similarities in Laaksonen’s early sketches as in my mother’s drawings.
I learned about colors while playing under my grandmother’s loom. I even follow the color theory in my diet: I eat a lot of green, often red, sometimes yellow, and purple when I want to stimulate my creativity.
Art is not a question of age
My grandmother made her best art textiles when she was over 70. While working in advertising, I decided that I would become an artist at 60.
In November 2023, I curated an exhibition in which I also displayed my own ink and acrylic paintings. In July 2024, I continued the sailing-related works at the AARK Archipelago residency in Korppoo. I have named the paintings after boats. In my paintings, I express the feelings associated with sailing trips, such as joy, lightness, jealousy, fear and cramped conditions. Their style is surreal, colorful and childlike.
In autumn 2024, I started a new series ’The 19th century feminists’. In it, I deal with today’s polarizations through humor and distancing. I do not make portraits, but caricatures, generic suffragette images, in which I can oppose war without becoming a preacher.
Btw April the 18th and My 29th in 2025 I had a show with 14 paintings in Helsinki. On the last day before the finissage I was asked to display my paintings at Peace Station. In October there is a chance to see them in Turku at Greve Cafe & Deli that locates the new housing area Herttuankulma. By choosing alternative places for my exhibits I want to see how the subjects in my paintings create new meanings. I wish that people not familiar with museums or galleries could find the art too.
